EBSCOhost Enhancements

EBSCOhost has announced the following enhancements:

• Additional Authorities Available in Related Information, for example, Related Business Videos and Company Information.
• MP3 Downloads are available for content that supports the Text-to-Speech function, from the Detailed Record view.
• The Date Slider reflects the Result List date range unless manually adjusted by the user. Changes made to the Date Slider are sticky--its usage is reflected in the breadbox as a limiter, and in Search History.
• Branding is available for the bottom of a Detail Record, when enabled in EBSCOadmin from the Add Branding or the Modify Branding screen.
• Citations 2010 features the addition of the Harvard and new APA (6th edition) formats.
• Minimum Browser Requirements have changed, and Internet Explorer 6.0 support will cease as of January 2011. See the updated minimum browser requirements in this FAQ.

JSTOR Update

JSTOR announced platform update, including both new and upgraded features.

New features:

• A wider range of content formats, including full-text HTML for some journals and downloadable PDFs for all current journal issues
• Multimedia files for some journals
• New personalization features, including the ability to register for Table of Contents (TOC) emails and alerts when new content matches saved search terms
• New informational pages for the titles participating in the Current Scholarship Program

Upgrades:

• Article citation information will reside within the “View Citation” overlay
• The “Collections at your institution” page will list licensed Archive Collections and licensed CSP titles. Please note that the export of an institution-specific holdings file will no longer be accessible from this page, but may be requested by contacting support@jstor.org

IBISWorld Subscription Active

IBISWorld is now available as part of the electronic resources collection at Owens Library. "IBISWorld provides thoroughly researched, accurate and current economic, demographic and government data on businesses in over 700 industries."

The subscription to Readers' Guide Retrospective will conclude on November 30, 2010.

Mental Measurements Yearbook WITH Tests in Print

"To alleviate these conditions, EBSCO Publishing, in collaboration with the Buros Institute, has agreed to re-engineer these products into a single database. Furthermore, we will combine the Tests in Print citations with the Mental Measurements Yearbook full-text reviews, into a single, more comprehensive record. There are several advantages to this approach, including:

• Full access to all search options will be provided for these products
• All information for a given test will be available in one concise record
• Direct access to MMY full text will be available through a single TIP/MMY citation
• Users will no longer see two results for the same test

In addition to these search and display improvements, EBSCO will also release new backfile volumes of Mental Measurements Yearbook. Mental Measurements Yearbook currently includes Yearbooks 9 through the current Yearbook. The Buros Institute has recently digitized yearbooks 1-8. This important content will be added to EBSCOhost with this release."

Geobase is has been canceled; upon inquiry of cancellation, searches were suspended by OCLC.

EBSCOhost Updates

"The following information summarizes the most significant changes on EBSCOhost:

•The limiter and the date slider column will move from the right to the left of the Result List, a more intuitive position that consolidates the ways users can refine and work with their results in one area. •Detailed record pages will be more streamlined, and links to full text, your link resolvers, ILL, etc. will be more prominently displayed on the left.

Report on "Lessons From the Bottom of the Sea"

"Lessons from the Bottom of the Sea:
Supervisory Concepts form the Last Hours of the Titanic"

In his presentation, Dr. Douglas R. Wermedal, identifies ten key supervisory concepts based on lessons learned during the first and last voyage of the RMS Titanic.

1. Appearance is important
• make things look good and give your full attention to task
• the 4th stack on Titanic was non-functioning, yet paintings/drawings show it with smoke billowing like the rest
2. The task in front of you is larger than you alone can manage
• communication, collaboration, relationships; what matter is success, not if you get along
3. Facing issues head on is usually the best course
• the RMS Olympic, Titanic's sister ship, collided with the HMS Hawke, while damage was sustained, due to the nature of the head on collision, neither ship sank
• if Titanic has hit the ice burg head on (instead of trying to port about), it wouldn't have sank as a single point of the ship would have been exposed to damage instead of the full side
4. The past is a teacher of skills, not a predictor of the future
• Doug read a quote about Captain E.J. Smith's successful career before becoming captain of Titanic
5. Pay attention to warnings

• be vigilant in watching for indicators of problems/issues
• six ice burg warnings were received on Titanic
6. The biggest problem of the day may be lurking behinds a smaller problem you have already solved
• watch for bending/breaking of policies and procedures, have this information written out and available for reference
• while watertight compartments on Titanic were vertically water tight, they were not watertight horizontally (like an ice tray)
7. Are your precautions precautionary enough?
• be vigilant of happenings in the department, building, university
• the Titanic had a coal fire on board from the moment of departure, Captain Smith is so relieved that the fire is out he pockets and ignores ice burg warning notes
8. Your response to a mistake can often be worse than the original mistake itself
• your response sets the tone, internal and external, of the mistake response - admit the mistake and suggest a fix
• the initial response was to get White Star staff back to England from New York, this is perceived as a cover up
9. Follow procedure and rely on your training
•  policy and procedure are premade decisions, set when staff can rationally discuss and consider actions; be resolute in orders during times of crisis
10. Use those above you as resources to overcome potential problems
• there is someone above you looking out after you, there is someone below you for you to look out for 
• perfect storm: F. Fleet, the look out on Titanic, had no binoculars; no moon to reflect the water surface; no wind to create waves -- in the crow's nest Fleet is the first to know Titanic is in trouble and sound the warning

Please be aware that the Capitol Improvement Budget recommendations are passed on to the Environment Services Department/Leadership Team for consideration as they budget the University monies. Other suggestions may be considered for allocation from the Library Budget.

Database cancellations

We decided in Collection Management not to renew Mergent Online (too much duplication with what is in LexisNexis Business, and it is very expensive) and Bridgeman Art Library (very low usage, and we have given the Art department two years to build usage).

Although Owens Library is canceling its direct subscription to Library Technology Reports, this title is available full-text online in EBSCO (2002-present) and Gale (1992-14 days ago) databases.

Horace Mann Library Hours in May

Horace Mann Library will be closed from Sat., May 15 through Sunday, June 6. There were requests the last couple summers from some university education classes to use our resources during the May session. These requests came mainly from the social studies and math education classes. Popular periodical titles delayed

Four popular magazine subscriptions of Owens Library are delayed this year from the publisher Rodale. The titles are Prevention, Bicycling, Runners World, and Organic Gardening. The customer service message from our vendor Ebsco explained the delay as follows:
"Ebsco was in negotiations with the publisher, Rodale. They have allowed Ebsco to send orders in early Feb 2010. These orders most likely won't be starting until April 2010. I have sent the publishers a claim to advise of start and expire date for each order." Our start and expire dates are 01/01/2010 to 12/31/2010.
