I that replacing/fixing the HVAC system is a priority for the building. Visit Room 132 anytime to hear the airplane taking off :-)
Sorry...my previous comment should say "I agree"
A spinoff idea from a _Library Journal_ article:
Have an after hours "movie maker" night (Windows Mover Maker is on the campus loadset) in the library and then exhibit them in the library. We could collaborate with the Mass Comm dept and Client-Computing to accomplish it.
I think it should be a priority to have the entire building be wireless (especially in the conference room).
I, with the help of multiple student workers, have re-arranged the furniture in the point on third floor. I encourage you to take a look and offer comments or suggestions. This fall will be our test period; I want to determine if students respond positively to the change. If so, I would like to re-arrange more furniture on the third floor. I would also like to throw some color on the walls in the point, add some soft lighting through the use of track lights or reading lamps. We could turn this area into a comfortable area that students will WANT to visit and utilize. If the money is there, we could invest in some more comfortable and modern furniture-- this decision would be based on students’ response of course due to the high cost.
If the above proposal receives positive response I would like to take the reading area a bit further. What do you all think of a reading area located under the skylight? My thoughts are to construct some walls (not full walls, 6-8 feet tall) so that the area is positioned under one or two sections of the skylight. (There are 4 sections of skylight on third floor.) Add more of the earlier mentioned comfortable modern furniture. Add some 'soft' lighting and tables, maybe a small fountain in the corner for a little background noise. Again this would be a location in the building that students would feel comfortable coming and passing an afternoon reading or working on class work. Thoughts?
Glenn and I have talked about re-working the student lounge. To me it seems uncomfortable to sit at a table that is placed next to the restrooms and eat. What are your thoughts on building a 6 ft. wall with a strip of lattice work on top towards the south end of the lounge. Take one third of the lounge and turn it into a comfortable location that students will WANT to go to eat or take a break from studying.
On first floor straight south of the library services desk is a group of couches. I think it would be nice to have some sort of a centerpiece there. Does anyone know if we still have a marine biology degree here at Northwest? If so, would it worthwhile to invest in a tropical fish aquarium, the marine biology students would be charged with maintaining it. They get hands-on experience, we get a nice centerpiece. We could then construct benches or seats around that for students and guests to sit on. Thoughts, concerns?
Again with the first floor, I have a small concern with the fact that we have no Northwest green in the building. I think it would look nice to paint all of the support columns bearcat green on first floor. Going a step further, on both ends of the signage near the ceiling on first floor, place a green bearcat paw. This could help tie all of the colors in together. Finally, if the display cases outside of the administration office were removed what do you all think of painting that wall bearcat green? At that point large white bearcat paws could be painted on the green wall. Any thoughts?
This concerns all three floors. I can't take full credit for this idea; it is currently being employed at the station. If we were to join efforts with the art department on campus I think it would be nice to display student art here in the library. We have ample wall space, allow art students (pencil, photography, canvas and paint, sculpting, etc.) to hang/display their art (after approval: no nudity of course) in the building. We could affix some sort of a plaque next to the art so that the artist could leave their contact information. I am sure that most of this art would be for sale. We could allow the art to hang for any amount of time, 1 month, 3 months, or 1 trimester. I think this would bring some color into the building, change of scenery, etc. Additionally, we would get more traffic into the building as the artist will want to show off their work to friends.
I'm personally against a Bearcat green color because I don't think that sets a soothing mood for studying/talking in groups/etc. I don't mind green, but I'd rather it be in the sage range. I think I'd prefer coffee-shop colors (dark yellows/oranges/reds). I thought pawprints were just used for athletics now...I know the campus seemed to be pushing everyone (but athletics) to use the green "N". I like the idea of an aquarium...as long as it doesn't smell fishy (my brother had fish for years and there was always an odor attached). I like your idea of collaborating with another department on upkeep - very creative :) Who would take care of it in the summer? Will it be like kindergarten - where some students get to take the pet home with them over the summer? I like the alternative of a nice centerpiece (that possibly changes with the seasons) on the table inside the entrance (since this is a focal point and a "first impression" area). I REALLY like the arrangement of the lounge furniture. I also like the browsing furniture arrangement, but the chair along the empty bookshelves will probably need to be moved since we're going to start using those bookshelves for videos soon (since the current browsing videos are becoming tight). I'm on the fence about adding smaller walls around the skylight area. I like the openness of this area...skylights=airiness to me. I think I'd have to see this one to understand because I'm having a hard time visualizing in my head.
We could also ask faculty/staff artists if they'd like to display their art.
